Reflection on history in the making...

This morning at the office it was hard to work, as the wonders of technology made it possible to watch the inauguration of the 44th President of the United States via live streaming video right at my desktop computer. Thank goodness for dual monitors! Keeping the right screen filled with a billing table that needed revising, it was still possible to view and listen to the inaugural coverage on the left screen. The real wonder was that the whole Internet didn't crash from overload as the many people in our firm logging on were joined simultaneously by millions across the world - all of us were wanting to witness history in the making.

It really was inspiring to see the hundreds of thousands of people in just Washington D.C. alone who were obviously investing all their hopes and dreams in the man and in the moment. That spirit of optimism was contagious! It no longer seemed to matter who was from a "blue state" and who was from a "red state" - today all Americans waved the same flag - one bearing BOTH blue and red. It also didn't seem to matter who was white and who was black. All one had to do was to look at the sea of faces in the crowd. The flowing tears and fervent prayers were evidence of a collective longing for this new president to be the one to lead our country out of the current economic crisis and out of war; to direct our government to craft legislation that will begin to solve the litany of problems that have appeared insurmountable; to instill in our young people a "Yes You Can" attitude and an assurance that with education and hard work anything is possible. To black Americans it was understandably an unbelievably momentous day - and what impressive role models President Obama and his loving family will be. Their love, and the belief and trust in one other shines in their eyes - from Mr. Obama all the way down to little Sasha! I honestly wasn't sure all through the campaign who the right candidate would be - it still wasn't clear even after the votes were tallied - but I have to pray today that Mr. Obama will carry out the office of President of the United States with strength and honesty and a determination to do what is best for ALL Americans. May God direct him and his staff, protect him and his family - and may God Bless America!
